Academic history

I graduated from National University of Singapore in July 2007.

My honours project was an investigation of the web-decorating behaviour displayed by orb-weaving spiders in the genus Cyclosa. The effects of visual signals from web decorations on the predatory spider Portia labiata and the prey Drosophila melanogaster were examined.

My current postgraduate research project is an investigation of the adaptive significance of ultra-violet reflectance in the jumping spider Cosmophasis umbratica. The benefits and costs of bearing UV-reflective ornamentations shall be examined.

Research interests

To identify the UV-reflective characteristics that are important for making mate choice decisions by females.

To evaluate the fitness consequences of female mate choice by monitoring the growth rates and survivability of offspring fathered by preferred males and non-preferred males.

To investigate the influence of paternal genes on the expression of UV reflectance in the male offspring.
To ascertain whether UV-reflective ornamentations of male C. umbratica spiders increase predation risk.
